longhouse quinte mohawk school

Last   week  we were  at  Quinte Mohawk  School . I was  in  a  class  room of   grade  six students, we   made Longhouses. I had  no  idea  what   this  was  until  they  told  me  what  they  were. Longhouse are native american homes  that   are  built  similarly to  wigwams, with  pole frames and elm bark covering . The main difference is  that  longhouse are  much larger than wigwams they  could  be  200 feet  long , 20 feet   wide and 20  feet  high inside  the  longhouse ,is  a  raised platforms created  asecond  story .Mats and  wood screens divded the  long  house into  separate rooms . Each  longhouse  has  many  as  60 people  in  it. Longhouses are  good  homes for  people who  intend  to  stay   in  the  same  place for  a long time .A longhouse is  large and  takes a lot of time to  build  and  decorate .
